Chapter 9 — First Flight to Halston

The trip to Halston was decided overnight, and the one who suffered most was Ben — the trainee handed the entire logistics of his very first business trip.

Ben stayed up late building a detailed itinerary, planned down to the hour, for the three of them: Diane, Daniel, and himself. He made the flight reservations, weighing a one-way ticket against a round-trip one — choosing round-trip to save money — and winced when he saw that even an economy fare to Halston took a real bite out of the budget. There was no direct flight: the group would have to take a connecting flight, with a two-hour layover in between. Ben printed out the schedule and repeated it like a prayer: be on time.

On the morning of departure, the team reached the terminal early. At the check-in counter, Ben’s heart nearly stopped: his own passport was about to expire — it was valid for only four more months. The agent frowned, made a call to verify, and finally waved him through, since Halston required only three months of validity. Daniel patted his shoulder, laughing. “First lesson of business travel.”

Past security, the three reached gate 12 to wait to board. But the display suddenly flashed a 90-minute delay. Ben went pale — a delay meant they might miss their connecting flight, or worse, face a cancellation. Diane stayed calm and had Ben call the airline to push back their connection. At last the flight let passengers on. Ben got an aisle seat, pushed his carry-on into the overhead compartment, and exhaled.

Thanks to the pilot making up time in the air, the group caught their connection by a hair. On arrival in Halston hours later, they filed through customs, then waited at baggage claim for their suitcases. Ben, still glued to his itinerary, led everyone toward the free airport shuttle. But Daniel — who had been to Halston before — shook his head and pointed at a nearby platform: “The express train is faster into the center; and if you want the view, there’s even a ferry along the bay.”

As the train shot into the heart of the city, all three looked out the window. Halston revealed itself — dense, dazzling, and dizzyingly busy.
