Bài 16 — PURCHASING: Vận chuyển · Hóa đơn & Thanh toán
Chương 16 của truyện dài “Project Aria” — Aster Home Technologies. (Hồi II — Ra thế giới; khép cụm Purchasing.) 20 từ (mục 11.3 Vận chuyển + 11.4 Hóa đơn & Thanh toán trong
vocab-list.md).
Ben tập cách track a shipment (theo dõi lô hàng) qua mã vận đơn, mắt dán màn hình.

⚠️ damaged = hỏng do vận chuyển (bên ngoài) ≠ defective = lỗi từ sản xuất (bản thân sản phẩm) — TOEIC rất hay bắt phân biệt. due = đến hạn (payment is due), khác valid = còn hiệu lực; outstanding ở đây = chưa thanh toán (khác nghĩa “xuất sắc” ở Lesson 13). free of charge = at no additional cost = miễn phí (cặp đồng nghĩa hay hoán đổi ở Part 6). refund (hoàn tiền) ↔ exchange (đổi hàng) — hai cách xử lý hàng lỗi. surcharge = phụ phí (sur- = thêm); shipping and handling luôn đi thành cụm.
Phần 3 — Bản truyện tiếng Anh (luyện đọc/nghe)
Chapter 16 — The Rush Shipment
The phone call at the end of Chapter 15 had come true: Corstone, the supplier of Aria’s most important chip, could not deliver on time. Ray Osei had only a few days to find a replacement before the whole line ground to a halt. Thanks to his wide network of contacts, Fred Okonkwo turned up a lead: Halston Components Co. — the very firm that had run a clearance sale earlier — still had a compatible lot of chips in stock. Cheap and fast, but all the way over in Halston.
The problem now was not buying; it was getting the parts home in time. Ben shadowed Ray on the logistics. Halston Components promised to dispatch the lot that same day. By sea, as ordinary freight, it would take three weeks — far too late. So Ray booked an air carrier and asked them to expedite the entire shipment; the most urgent samples went separately by courier to arrive within 48 hours. Ben learned to track a shipment by its waybill number, eyes glued to the screen.
Speed had its price. The fee sheet appeared: on top of the goods came shipping and handling, plus a hefty surcharge for the rush service. Ray winced — the budget was already stretched to the limit — but he approved it. The crates were plastered with fragile labels: chips are delicate things, ruined by even a small knock.
Three days later a truck backed up to the Eastport warehouse. The moment the doors opened, Ben’s face fell: the packaging was crushed, one corner of the crate caved in. Inside, nearly half the chips were damaged from being jolted on the road; worse, a few trays had been defective from the start — contact pins bent, clearly a factory fault rather than shipping damage.
Ray called Priya in Finance at once, because a thick invoice had come with the load. Together they itemized every line: the chips, shipping and handling, the rush surcharge, and on top of it an outstanding balance from an earlier order that had never been cleared. At the bottom: payment due within ten days. Ray refused to pay in full for broken goods. He emailed Halston Components demanding a refund for the damaged and defective units, or an exchange for a fresh lot. After some back and forth, the seller gave in: they would send the replacements free of charge and cover the shipping at no additional cost.
It seemed the crisis had been solved. But that evening, as Ben restacked the trays that were still intact, he froze: the batch codes printed on the sleeves were old — from two years back, exactly the type Halston Components was clearing out to “make room for new models.” He picked up one chip, studied the slightly odd solder ridge, and looked up at Ray.

Questions 21–23 refer to the following report.
Aster Operations — Component Sourcing Update After our main supplier failed to deliver, we secured a replacement lot of chips from Halston Components Co. To meet the fixed launch date, the shipment was flown in and expedited rather than sent by sea freight, which added a significant surcharge on top of shipping and handling. On arrival, however, the packaging was crushed and about half the units were damaged in transit, while a smaller number were found to be defective from the factory. We have demanded a refund for the unusable units and negotiated replacements at no additional cost.
21. Why did the shipment cost more than usual?
(A) It was bought at retail
(B) It was flown in and expedited
(C) The chips were bought in bulk
(D) The invoice was itemized
22. What was the difference between the two kinds of faulty units?
(A) Some were damaged in transit and others were defective from the factory
(B) Some were fragile and others were durable
(C) Some were on backorder
(D) All were simply late
23. What did Aster obtain from the supplier?
(A) A larger surcharge
(B) A bigger catalog
(C) Replacements at no additional cost
(D) A wholesale discount
Questions 24–26 refer to the following article.
Marlowe Business Journal — Aster Beats the Clock, But at What Cost? Aster Home Technologies has managed to keep its Aria line moving after a last-minute supply crisis. When its main chip supplier missed its deadline, the operations team rushed a replacement shipment from an alternative vendor and paid a premium to expedite delivery. Aster also won a refund on parts that arrived damaged. Yet industry watchers remain cautious. The replacement chips, they note, came from older clearance stock that was never fully tested, and quality problems in a smart-home device can be costly to fix once units are already on the assembly line.
24. How did Aster keep the Aria line moving?
(A) By cancelling the launch
(B) By rushing a replacement shipment and expediting delivery
(C) By returning to its original supplier
(D) By pausing all production
25. What did Aster recover for the damaged parts?
(A) A refund
(B) A surcharge
(C) A larger order
(D) A tax exemption
26. Why do industry watchers remain cautious?
(A) The launch date was moved
(B) The budget was increased
(C) The replacement chips came from untested clearance stock
(D) The warehouse was full
