Bài 4 — PERSONNEL: Lương & Phúc lợi · Thăng chức, Khen thưởng & Nghỉ việc
Chương 4 của truyện dài “Project Aria” — Aster Home Technologies. 27 từ (mục 10.3 + 10.4 trong
vocab-list.md). Nhân vật chính: Priya Nair (Dịch vụ DN) & Diane Whitfield (CEO). Cameo: John SB (kỹ sư IT), Ben Tran (trainee).

Chapter 4 — Keeping the Team
Ben Tran began his first rotation right where he had been hired — in Priya’s Corporate Services team. On the first Monday of the new week, he was given a crash course: sitting beside Priya as she reviewed the entire payroll for Project Aria. The figure startled him — since the hiring drive began, the payroll had grown noticeably.
“Recruiting people is only half the job,” Priya said, running her finger down each line. “The other half, and the harder one, is keeping them.”
She showed Ben how a compensation figure was assembled from many pieces: the fixed monthly salary of the office staff, the hourly wage of support workers and factory hands, plus a whole package of benefits — insurance, leave, and travel support. The weeks of sprinting toward the Aria launch had driven up overtime costs: everyone was staying late, and extra hours had to be paid.
Priya was mid-sentence when her phone rang. It was Diane. “Priya, come down to my office. It’s a personnel matter.”
The rumor from the day before had come true: John SB — the IT engineer who “threatened to quit” every other day — had this time handed in a real notice. In his hand was an offer from Neura, with a noticeably higher salary. “This time I really am going to resign,” John said, though his eyes still wavered.
Diane was not about to lose a good engineer to a rival so easily. Together with Priya, she quickly put together a counteroffer: a substantial raise, a retention bonus paid up front, and — to John’s surprise — a chance to transfer into the core Aria team, opening a clear path to a promotion within the year. Priya confirmed that he would remain eligible for the year-end bonus and entitled to the same leave as before, plus a travel allowance if he had to fly to Halston.
John held the sheet of paper, silent for a long moment. “Let me… think about it,” he said, and closed the browser tab that always sat open on a jobs page — at least for today.
But Diane understood the problem was bigger than one man. If Neura could lure John away, it could go after the whole workforce. She decided to strike first at morale itself. With Priya, she announced a recognition program: a quarterly “Aria Star” award, given in recognition of outstanding accomplishments, to lift staff morale and curb the turnover that had begun to creep upward.
Someone asked the question directly in the meeting: with all this expansion, would Aster one day have to lay off people, as the rumors about Neura suggested? Diane’s answer was firm: as long as she held her seat, Aster would not dismiss anyone just to tidy the books. “Buying a company is how they cut costs — they’ve already budgeted severance pay for half of you. We’re doing the opposite: keeping our people, and growing.”
As the meeting broke up, a veteran engineer lingered to shake Diane’s hand — he was due to retire at the end of the year, and was relieved that his pension plan would stay fully intact through the storm. For him, that was the clearest possible answer to the question of independence versus a sale.

Phần 5 — Đáp án & giải thích
Part 5
- B (raise) — “ask for a raise” = xin tăng lương; hợp với “without any pay increase”. morale/turnover/allowance sai nghĩa. ⚠️ raise (n) = khoản tăng lương.
- C (eligible) — “be eligible for sth” = đủ điều kiện nhận gì. entitled đi với to, không hợp giới từ ở đây; competent/proficient nói về năng lực.
- B (entitled) — “be entitled to sth” = có quyền được hưởng. Đây là cặp bẫy với câu 2: eligible + for, entitled + to. liable (chịu trách nhiệm) sai nghĩa.
- D (overtime) — “work overtime” = làm thêm giờ; hợp với “tight deadline… throughout the month”. payroll/turnover/severance không đi với “work”.
- D (compensation) — “compensation package” gồm salary + benefits + bonus = gói đãi ngộ tổng. recognition/probation/reference sai loại gói.
- A (resign) — “threatened to resign” = dọa xin nghỉ; người “frustrated by slow promotion” chủ động nghỉ → resign. retire là nghỉ hưu (do tuổi), recruit/relocate sai nghĩa. ⚠️ resign (tự nghỉ) ≠ dismiss/lay off (bị nghỉ).
- B (promotion) — “be up for a promotion” = đang được xét thăng chức; “a promotion to department head”. pension/dismissal/vacancy sai nghĩa.
- A (turnover) — “employee turnover” = tỷ lệ nghỉ việc; hợp với “replacing and training new staff”. workforce (lực lượng lao động) là bẫy nghĩa gần nhưng không nói về “tỷ lệ rời đi”.
- D (wage) — nhân viên trả theo giờ → “hourly wage”; đối lập với “salaried managers” (ăn lương cố định). ⚠️ salary (cố định tháng/năm) ≠ wage (theo giờ).
- B (lay off) — “lay off workers” = cho thôi việc do cắt giảm chi phí. recruit (tuyển), promote (thăng chức), reimburse (hoàn tiền) trái nghĩa/ngữ cảnh.
- C (allowance) — “travel allowance” = phụ cấp đi lại. award (giải thưởng), invoice/receipt (hóa đơn/biên lai) sai nghĩa.
- A (benefits) — “benefits package” (bảo hiểm + nghỉ phép) = gói phúc lợi. minutes/premises/findings sai loại.
Part 6
- C (workforce) — “our workforce grows” = lực lượng lao động lớn dần. overtime/premises/invoice không “grow to support a project”.
- A (eligible) — “be eligible for a bonus” (đủ điều kiện). entitled cần to; liable/proficient sai nghĩa.
- D (recognition) — “a recognition program… to celebrate outstanding work” = chương trình ghi nhận. probation/reservation/orientation sai nghĩa.
- C (retire) — “after 25 years… will retire at the end of December” = nghỉ hưu (do thâm niên/tuổi). resign (tự xin nghỉ giữa chừng) và dismiss (bị sa thải) đều sai sắc thái; transfer là điều chuyển.
- A (pension) — “guaranteed pension plan… retirement is secured” = lương hưu. payroll/severance/allowance không phải khoản hưu trí.
- B (award) — “receive a special award in recognition of his accomplishments” = được trao giải thưởng. grievance/probation/vacancy sai nghĩa.
Part 7
- B — bài viết mô tả kế hoạch giữ chân nhân viên (raise salaries, recognition award, không sa thải). (A) trái nội dung; (C)/(D) không phải trọng tâm.
- A (keep) — “retain talent” ≈ keep (giữ người); chính câu mở đầu đã diễn giải “keeping our people”. dismiss/hire/train không đồng nghĩa.
- B — Neura cắt giảm nhân sự còn Aster mở rộng đội ngũ (“reduce its personnel” vs “expanding its workforce”). (A) đảo ngược; (C)/(D) trái với bài.
⚠️ personnel ≠ personal.
