Ray hiểu đây không phải chuyện nhỏ. Chapter 8 — Bright Lights and a Simmering Floor

Just as the plan had laid out, the first big milestone came quickly: the Northbridge Tech Expo, the industry’s annual conference and trade show. But while Daniel shone under the bright lights of the conference, an hour’s drive away Ray was busy putting out a slow-burning fire on the factory floor.

In downtown Northbridge, Daniel led a small group into the conference. The venue was a huge convention center, packed with people. Just past the registration desk, Ben — brought along to learn — was dazzled by the crowd of attendees. The morning opened with a keynote speaker on the future of the smart home; the program then split into smaller sessions, plus a hands-on workshop on AI that Ben eagerly joined. Daniel handed out a handout introducing Aria to visitors at the Aster booth, then took a seat on a panel debating industry trends. But what he valued most were the networking breaks — where he shook hands with journalists and even ran into people from Neura. It was in one such corner that Karen Ito of Brightway, who had also flown in, pulled Daniel aside: Halston was about to hold a major trade show, and she wanted Aria to appear there, right in the middle of its target market.

At the very same time, the mood at the Eastport plant was far heavier. To have an Aria prototype ready for the expo, the workers had been putting in overtime for weeks, and exhaustion had turned into resentment. Joe Delgado, the foreman, knocked on Ray’s door with a grim face: the union had just formally filed a grievance about excessive overtime with too little compensation.

Ray knew this was no small matter. If the dispute dragged on, some had already hinted at a strike, or even a walkout right in the middle of the sprint — something that could kill the schedule. Instead of pushing back, Ray chose to sit down. He invited the union representatives into collective bargaining, listened, and tried to mediate between the company’s pressure to deliver and the workers’ limits.

The meeting ended with a temporary deal: fewer overtime hours, plus higher pay for them. But as he saw Ray out, Joe lowered his voice. “This time it’s fine. But the closer we get to launch, the harder you push — and I can’t keep them calm forever.”
