The rental car had barely stopped when Ben let out a sigh of relief: they had made it on time. The harbourside restaurant — The Harbourline — glowed with warm light, looking out over the shimmering water of Halston. Ben had chosen the venue with care, on the advice, in fact, of Fred Okonkwo, the company’s self-appointed food expert back in Marlowe. Days beforehand, Ben had phoned to book a table and confirmed the reservation by email. He had been careful to explain in advance: a party of four — Diane, Daniel, Karen, and himself — and had asked for quiet seating by the window so they could talk. The manager assured him they could easily accommodate a table like that, and had held the best spot in the house.

Karen Ito was already waiting inside and rose to shake each hand. Daniel, ever the marketing director, quickly claimed the right to host the dinner. “Tonight is on Aster,” he said, “as a small thank-you to Brightway for bringing us all the way out here.” The mood warmed over small talk about the local food.

But as the first appetizers arrived, Karen set down her glass and got to business. “I have a proposal — a slightly unexpected one.” Every year, she explained, Brightway held a banquet for all of its top retail partners in Halston — a grand reception at one of the city’s finest venues. This year it would be a buffet, run from start to finish by a renowned caterer whose catering covered the refreshments and beverages for several hundred guests.

“My condition,” Karen said, her eyes sharpening, “is that Aria makes its debut at that event — in front of every retailer in Halston. If you’re bold enough, Brightway will put its full weight behind you. But that means being ready on our schedule… and you are not the only name I’m considering.”
